Trade Shows and Product Launches: Protecting a Reveal on a Show Floor

A trade show booth is a strange piece of real estate. You have spent months and a serious budget getting an unreleased product onto a table, and then you invite several thousand strangers, competitors included, to stand two feet away from it holding a camera.

The leak from a show floor is rarely dramatic. It is a blurry photograph of a prototype from an angle your design team would never have chosen, published by someone with no obligation to you and no interest in your launch timing. By the time your own photography goes out, the internet has already formed an opinion based on a bad picture of an early unit.

A phone-free booth solves a narrower problem than a phone-free venue, and that makes it easy to run. Pouches go on at the entrance to your booth, demo suite or stand tour, and come off as guests leave, so the rest of the show floor operates exactly as normal. Attendees keep their own phones the entire time, which matters when the person you are demoing to is a buyer who needs to stay reachable. Before the Internet runs the same setup for private analyst previews, press briefings and launch events under embargo.

The argument that lands with executives is usually the one about NDAs. Everyone at a press preview has signed something, and that document is a remedy rather than a control: it gives you a claim after your roadmap is public, which is not the outcome anybody wanted. Sealing the cameras means the photograph never exists. Worth knowing before you plan: custom branded pouches need six weeks, and a booth pouch carrying your logo is the most-held object at the show.
