Kenya's School Phone Ban: What Schools Need to Know in 2026
Yes. Kenya has banned students from having mobile phones in schools since October 2008, when Education Minister Sam Ongeri announced the ban in Parliament. It covers basic education learners, and phones are also barred from national exam centres.
The ban is a Ministry of Education directive, not a separate act of parliament. Announced on 2 October 2008, it took effect immediately. The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association says phones remain prohibited in any basic education space. During national exams the Kenya National Examinations Council requires everyone in an exam centre, including candidates, invigilators and support staff, to surrender phones.
The ban came after a wave of student strikes and school unrest in mid-2008, alongside other discipline measures. In 2019 secondary heads and a teachers' union proposed lifting it to allow learning on phones, but primary heads and the parents' association opposed this, and the ban stayed. In 2025 officials still described phones as the biggest threat to exam integrity, and no change to the ban has been announced.
Schools enforce the ban through their own rules, often by confiscation. Enforcement is uneven. During the 2025 exam period officials reported students hiding phones in clothing, exam papers shared on social media and dozens of phones confiscated in single schools. The exams council chief executive called phones its biggest challenge in running exams, with compliance still inconsistent.
Whatever the rule in Kenya requires, lockable pouches let students keep their own phone, locked, from the first bell to the last, so schools do not collect, store or answer for devices. Before The Internet ships lockable phone pouches and unlocking bases worldwide, including to Kenya, and can print the school's name or crest on them. Schools buy them outright: one price, no subscription, lease or per-student annual licence. Send us your student numbers and any written quote you already have, and we will beat it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kenya's school phone ban written into law?
It is a Ministry of Education directive announced in Parliament in October 2008, not a separate statute. Exam centre rules are set by the Kenya National Examinations Council.
Has Kenya considered lifting the ban?
Yes. Secondary heads and a teachers' union argued for lifting it in 2019 so phones could be used for learning, but the ban was kept and remains in force.
Can schools use phone pouches?
Nothing in the ban prescribes a storage method, so schools choose their own way to keep phones out of lessons and exam rooms. Pouches are one option alongside collection and confiscation.
