Does Lithuania Ban Phones in Schools? What Schools Need to Know in 2026

No. Lithuania has no national ban on phones in schools. Each school sets its own rules, and the education and health ministries recommend limiting personal devices, with more flexibility in the upper grades.

There is no national law. Schools decide their own rules, which may mean storing phones in a set place, keeping them switched off in bags, or banning them outright. Allowed uses typically include teacher-approved educational use, health needs and exceptional circumstances, and schools may temporarily take phones from pupils who break the rules. The education and health ministries have recommended limiting personal devices, with more flexibility in upper grades.

In 2022 the Seimas rejected a proposal to require every school to set phone rules. The education minister has said common rules would be proposed only if schools struggled to set their own. From 2025, the 'From Phones to School' initiative led by the Centre for Digital Ethics, backed by 24 organisations, has called for a full-day ban in grades 1 to 10. A Baltijos Tyrimai survey found nearly 70% of Lithuanians support such a ban.

Approaches vary widely. Kaunas's Hero School has had pupils leave phones in a visible box during lessons for nine years. Venta Gymnasium in Akmenė, phone-free for three years, reports rising from 107th to 30th in national rankings and less bullying, though this is one school's account. Other schools build phones into lessons for searches, QR codes and group work.

Whatever the rule at your school in Lithuania, from progimnazijos to gimnazijos, lockable pouches let students keep their own phone, locked, from the first bell to the last, so the school does not collect, store or answer for devices. Before The Internet ships lockable phone pouches and unlocking bases worldwide, including to Lithuania, and can print the school's name or crest on them. Schools buy them outright: one price, no subscription, lease or per-student annual licence. Send us your student numbers and any written quote you already have, and we will beat it.
