Luxembourg's School Phone Ban: What Schools Need to Know in 2026

Yes. Since 22 April 2025, smartphones are banned for the whole school day in Luxembourg's primary schools and maisons relais. Since 2 June 2025, secondary schools (lycées) must keep pupils physically separated from their phones during lessons at a minimum.

In primary education (enseignement fondamental), smartphones and connected devices are banned for the entire school day, including breaks and activities, and in maisons relais childcare. Pupils may bring a phone but must keep it switched off in their bag. Exceptions cover teaching use, medical needs with a certificate and special needs. In lycées, the minimum rule is physical separation from smartphones during lessons, set out in each school's charter.

Education Minister Claude Meisch launched the Screen Life Balance campaign in September 2024. The primary ban started after the Easter holidays, on 22 April 2025. Secondary schools had to draw up their own smartphone charters with their school communities, and the minimum lesson rule took effect after the Whitsun holidays, on 2 June 2025.

Lycées went beyond the minimum in most cases. Of the secondary schools reported, six banned phones in lessons only, 27 added areas such as canteens, libraries and common rooms, and five collect phones in the morning and return them at the end of the day. In primary schools, confiscation for the rest of the day and contact with parents for repeat breaches are used.

Whatever Luxembourg's rules require, lockable pouches let students keep their own phone, locked, from the first bell to the last, so the lycée or école fondamentale does not collect, store or answer for devices. Before The Internet ships lockable phone pouches and unlocking bases worldwide, including to Luxembourg, and can print the school's name or crest on them. Schools buy them outright: one price, no subscription, lease or per-student annual licence. Send us your student numbers and any written quote you already have, and we will beat it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ban cover breaks in lycées?

Not necessarily. The national minimum is separation during lessons, but each lycée's charter can extend it, and many do.

Does it apply to maisons relais?

Yes. The primary school ban extends to maisons relais childcare.

Are there exemptions?

Yes. Phones can be allowed for teaching, for medical reasons with a certificate, and for pupils with special needs.
