New Zealand's School Cellphone Ban: What Schools Need to Know in 2026
Yes. New Zealand banned student cellphone use at school from the start of Term 2 on 29 April 2024. The rule, known as Phones Away for the Day, covers the whole school day, including breaks.
Students must keep phones away for the full school day, in lessons and at break and lunch. The rule is set nationally by the government, so schools do not choose whether to apply it, only how. Exemptions cover monitoring a health condition, support for a disability, tasks set by a teacher, and personal circumstances approved by the principal.
The ban was led by Education Minister Erica Stanford. It took effect on 29 April 2024, the first day of Term 2. Before then, phone rules were left to individual schools. As of October 2026 we found no announced change to its scope or exemptions, so schools should keep a record of each exemption they grant and review their arrangements each year.
Schools handle the practical side, for example collecting phones at the start of the day, using lockers, or having students keep them switched off in bags or pouches. Including breaks was intended to encourage students to talk and play together. Exemptions are handled by each school, with the principal able to approve cases for personal circumstances.
Whatever Phones Away for the Day requires, lockable pouches let students keep their own phone, locked, from the first bell to the last, so kura and schools do not collect, store or answer for devices. Before The Internet ships lockable phone pouches and unlocking bases worldwide, including to New Zealand, and can print the school's name or crest on them. Schools buy them outright: one price, no subscription, lease or per-student licence. Send us your student numbers and any written quote you have, and we will beat it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ban cover breaks and lunch?
Yes. The rule covers the whole school day, including breaks, to encourage students to socialise.
Are there exemptions?
Yes. Students may use a phone to monitor a health condition, for disability support, for a teacher-set task, or where the principal approves for personal circumstances.
Can schools use phone pouches?
Yes. The rule says phones must be away for the day but leaves storage to each school, so lockers, collection or lockable pouches can all meet it.
