Spain's School Mobile Phone Ban: What Schools Need to Know in 2026

Partly. Spain has no national law, but every autonomous community restricts mobile phones in schools and nearly all ban them in primary. Secondary rules differ: Catalonia, Madrid and Extremadura ban them all day, while others allow teacher-approved educational use.

Rules are set by each autonomous community. Catalonia bans phones and smartwatches at all times in infant, primary and secondary, with no general teaching exception. Madrid bans them all day, breaks included, except for medical or accessibility needs. Extremadura requires them off and stored at all levels. Andalucía and Galicia ban use in school hours but allow teaching use from 3º ESO. Castilla y León, Navarra and País Vasco leave detail to schools.

Castilla y León (2007), Castilla-La Mancha (2014) and Galicia (2015) acted first. In January 2024 the education ministry proposed a primary ban and limited secondary use, and the State School Council recommended phones stay off from entry to exit. Most regions followed in early 2024. Catalonia announced a total ban up to 16 in June 2025, from 2025-26. A digital-protection bill in Congress in September 2026 targets social media, not school phones.

Most regional rules say phones must be switched off and stored for the school day, and leave the method to schools. Exceptions are usually teacher-authorised educational use and health or disability needs. Regions report results: Murcia claims a 73% fall in cyberbullying and Castilla-La Mancha a 35% fall in pupil stress, though these are regional government figures rather than independent studies.

Whatever the rule in Spain requires in your community, from colegios to institutos, lockable pouches let students keep their own phone, locked, from the first bell to the last, so the school does not collect, store or answer for devices. Before The Internet ships lockable phone pouches and unlocking bases worldwide, including to Spain, and can print the school's name or crest on them. Schools buy them outright: one price, no subscription, lease or per-student annual licence. Send us your student numbers and any written quote you already have, and we will beat it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national phone ban in Spanish schools?

No. The ministry and State School Council issued recommendations in 2024, but binding rules come from each autonomous community.

Does the ban cover breaks in secondary?

It depends on the region. Catalonia, Madrid and Extremadura cover the whole school day, while several other regions focus on school hours and allow teacher-approved use in later ESO years.

Can Spanish schools use phone pouches?

Yes. Regional rules generally require phones to be off and stored but leave the storage method to each school.
