Switzerland's School Phone Bans: What Schools Need to Know in 2026

Partly. There is no federal rule because cantons run schools, but a growing number ban phones. Valais, Aargau, Nidwalden and Jura brought in bans for 2025-26, Ticino extended its ban to all compulsory schooling in March 2026, and Geneva bans phones in primary and cycle d'orientation.

Valais has the widest ban: since August 2025 phones and electronic devices are banned on the whole site in compulsory school and Secondary II, breaks and outings included; Secondary II heads may set permitted zones. Aargau bans phones, smartwatches, tablets and laptops in class, breaks and events up to grade 9. Nidwalden bans private devices on primary premises. Ticino's ban covers all compulsory schooling, and Geneva's covers the cycle d'orientation.

The Federal Council says schools are a cantonal matter, though a March 2025 parliamentary request asked it to examine the effects of bans. Vaud has had restrictions since 2019. Aargau, Nidwalden, Jura and Valais acted for the 2025-26 school year, and Ticino extended its ban on 30 March 2026. Zurich's municipal schools banned phones from February 2026. In July 2026 Nidwalden confirmed its rules for the new year, reporting only isolated breaches.

In Ticino phones must be fully off, not in airplane mode; approved smartwatches go in a box each morning; confiscated phones come back at day's end with families told, and repeat cases only to parents. Geneva's sanctions run from confiscation to a half-day exclusion. Over 80% of the public back bans, but the national teachers' association prefers rules agreed with pupils. Exceptions usually cover teaching use and health needs.

Whatever the rule in Switzerland requires in your canton, from cycle d'orientation to Sekundarschule, lockable pouches let students keep their own phone, locked, from the first bell to the last, so the school does not collect, store or answer for devices. Before The Internet ships lockable phone pouches and unlocking bases worldwide, including to Switzerland, and can print the school's name or crest on them. Schools buy them outright: one price, no subscription, lease or per-student annual licence. Send us your student numbers and any written quote you already have, and we will beat it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national phone ban in Swiss schools?

No. The federal government has said it will not interfere in cantonal school matters, so each canton, and in some cantons each commune or school, sets the rule.

Does the Valais ban apply to upper secondary?

Yes. It covers compulsory schooling and general and vocational Secondary II, though Secondary II school leaders may define areas where devices are allowed.

Can Swiss schools use phone pouches?

Yes. Cantonal rules require phones to be off or put away and leave the storage method to schools, so lockable pouches fit within them.
